Ukrainian Language Arts Society (ULAS)

Our School of Dance is located at the St. Basil's Cultural Centre 10819-71 Avenue in Edmonton, Alberta. Class levels range from 3 year old beginners to adult performance classes and everything in between. The dance season runs from September to May. The class duration varies upon age and number of students and may range from 30 minutes to 120 minutes once per week.

Highlights of our Program

  • We provide full costumes with a refundable costume deposit cheque (upon return of the cleaned costume)
  • We ask for parent input on dance festival and competition participation
  • We host two concerts every year at the St. Basil’s Cultural Centre, one at the end of January and one mid-May
    • We serve up a brunch or dinner theatre experience for our year end concert and you may bring as many guests as you like
  • Each family participates in at least one volunteer duty, because many hands makes light work
    • Each family kindly volunteers for one casino every two years
  • Our students gain opportunities to fundraise and travel to practice and learn more about Ukrainian Dance and Culture and teach our craft to others

Our Mission

The objective of ULAS is to provide students with the opportunity to enjoy, appreciate, and learn traditions associated with Ukrainian dance and Ukrainian culture. We are devoted to providing dancers of all ages with an opportunity to excel and grow--both technically and socially. We believe in fostering a community atmosphere in which dancers develop friendships that last a lifetime.

Our Philosophy

Our mandate is to provide our students with high quality Ukrainian dance instruction regardless of age or skill level. Whether students are with us for one year or many, they will leave with a love and appreciation of the art and culture of Ukrainian dance. Fostering an atmosphere of self worth, accomplishment and community is highly valued. As an organization that is dependant upon volunteers for its daily operations, we place a high value on commitment, stewardship and camaraderie and passing these values to the next generation.

ULAS History

St. Basil's Ukrainian Language Arts Society (ULAS) was founded in 1975, but the dance school started in 1965. The society operates as an extension of the St. Basil's Ukrainian Catholic Parish in Edmonton, Alberta. We operate solely as a nonprofit organization that relies on parents or adult dancers as volunteers to manage the day to day operations of our organization.
